A guide to seniors golf at Maywood
All Maywood members aged 55 or over are eligible for free membership of our Seniors' Section and may play in seniors' competitions. The Seniors' Section is an extremely friendly and very active part of the Club, with well over 100 members,70-80 of us regularly playing in competitions.
The Section is managed by its own elected committee and holds an Annual General Meeting every October.
Players of all abilities are most welcome to join us. Our membership includes a wide range of players, with handicaps from 28 to single figures.
During the summer there are 11 seniors' competitions, played in a variety of formats, mostly Individual Stablefords. These take place almost entirely on Tuesday mornings, although it is possible for over-55s, who are working on the day of a qualifying competition, to play later in the day. 8 of our competitions are qualifiers for handicap purposes.
There is an entry fee of £2.50, payable to the professional on the day of the competition. There is also a voluntary professional's sweep (£1)
To enter, put your name on the entry sheet provided on the Seniors' notice board. The Competitions Secretary will allocate your tee time and playing partners.
Trophies are presented to the winners of most competitions at the Club's Presentation Evening in November. There are also prizes in the form of vouchers to be spent at the pro's shop.
Points awarded for success in in our qualifying competitions are used to form an Order of Merit, for which the winner receives a trophy.
Two big attractions are the Maywood Seniors' Open and the Senior Captain's Away Day. The Open attracts a large entry from over 30 clubs and has prizes totalling over £1,000.
During the summer we run both Singles and Pairs Knockout Competitions for which there are small entry fees.
There are 11 competitions during the winter. These are played on Tuesday mornings. They are all team competitions played in a variety of “interesting” formats. Arrangements for entries, fees and prizes are the same as those in the summer.
We also have a Winter League (Pairs Match Play) This runs from November to April.
We play friendly matches against 8 other clubs on a home and away basis. Teams are usually of 6 pairs. There is fee of up to £12, payable on the day of the match, which includes a meal. Those wishing to play put their names on a list on the Seniors' notice board. The Seniors' Captain selects the team from this list. Great golf prowess is not essential and many higher handicappers regularly play for the club.
This is our email service which enables seniors to receive tee times, results and other information in the comfort of their own homes. To join, just let the Competitions Secretary have your email address.
Tuesday is Seniors Day
When there is no competition we still gather on Tuesday mornings for less formal golf. Most people tee of between 8.00 and 9.00 a.m. Some of us play in a “£1 a corner” Stableford. There is also a “ penny a corner “ group. These also occur on Thursday mornings, although not when there is a midweek competition run by the main club.
Seniors' golf at Maywood is very competitive without being too serious.
We pride ourselves on being a most welcoming and sociable group, which strongly supports the Club. Post-golf socialising is important to us, providing, as it does, plenty of friendly banter and many highly amusing senior moments.
When it comes to really enjoyable golf, life begins at 55!
